Break The Cycle 2022 raised thousands for Bristol Bears Community Foundation and Bristol Sport Foundation as more than 100 cyclists saddled up for the latest edition.
Setting off from Ashton Gate Stadium as early as 7am, riders chose between the Gold (100 miles), Silver, (65 miles) and Bronze (40 miles) to raise money for the Bristol Sport family of charities and their life-changing work in the Bristol community.
More than £25,000 was raised by the annual fundraiser, which was supported by Lloyds Development Capital, Hargreaves Lansdown, Santander, Molson, Plantforce, Aspire, Sprague Gibbons, Heat, MHR Manager, Knee Specialist, Indigo Food Group, Nandos, BW Cycles, Ernst & Young, Whiteladies Business Centre and Everyone Active.
Peter Abel, growth capital director at Santander UK and one of the riders who took part on the day, said: “It was really well signposted, really well organised and there were great feed stops as well, great support. I loved it. The community support, the projects Bristol Sport Foundation do, it’s really worthwhile.”
Molson company director Robin Powell, who was also among the Break The Cycle participants, said: “Great weather, fabulous company, seriously well organised, food stops wherever we needed them, so it was a really exciting ride.
“For us, Steve Lansdown has got a vision about Bristol Sport and engaging with the community, we are the community and we’ve got to engage back the other way. Otherwise, that vision doesn’t come together so it’s really important that we double down and multiply his effect and we are trying hard as a business to engage with Bristol Sport Foundation.”
Ben Breeze, founding member of Break the Cycle and Chief Community Officer at Bristol Sport Foundation, said: “After two COVID years that enforced virtual events, followed by a random heatwave in July which forced us to postpone until September, I am very glad to report that everyone got round safe and sound, the weather was kind, the feed stops stayed well stocked and I didn’t have to fix a single puncture.
“A huge thank you to everyone who entered. We use the funds raised to support the most disadvantaged young people in Bristol to live Active, Healthy, Happy lives and your entry makes a BIG difference to us. I am also delighted to announce a date for Break The Cycle 2023 – Sunday 16th July 2023! The event will be based at Ashton Gate, and we intend for it to be the biggest and best yet.”
